The USP Chapter 467 method was designed to be as universal as possible for all sample matrices and as wide a variety of solvents as possible. Since the analytes are all solvents, they are as a general rule volatile though there are some exceptions. Using headspace keeps many of the complex matrix components off of the column and out of the system so this extends column lifetime and keeps the system free of non-volatile components.
