Torrance, Calif. (July 19, 2018) – Phenomenex Inc., global leader in the research, design and manufacture of advanced technologies for the separation sciences, announces a new Luna Omega phase for sugar analysis by hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC). Luna Omega SUGAR is specifically engineered for carbohydrate separation and analysis from food, beverage and pharmaceutical matrices, such as milk, animal feed, wine, soda, fruit and tablets. The novel Luna Omega SUGAR stationary phase incorporates an amide polyol, amino group with linker and polar endcapping, which together promote greater polar retention through a useful range of interaction mechanisms. With the combination of this HILIC stationary phase and thermally modified fully porous particles, Luna Omega SUGAR delivers significant performance gains in separation power, improved stability, increased reproducibility and faster analysis times compared to existing products on the market.
"We developed the Luna Omega SUGAR to help customers who were struggling with retention time variability, inadequate column lifetimes, long run times, poor specificity and low retention of highly polar compounds," explained Simon Lomas, senior manager of global product marketing for Phenomenex. "With this new HPLC/UHPLC HILIC column and simplified mobile phase system, customers can now attain easier and better separations of monosaccharides, disaccharides, and oligosaccharides."
To ensure high reproducibility, each Luna Omega SUGAR column and batch is certified by a stringent QC process centered around sugar-specific testing. This ensures the applicability of this new media for commonly used types of detection such as RI, ELSD and MS. In addition to the selectivity and particle performance benefits, a simplified set of running conditions were developed for use with the Luna Omega SUGAR. By focusing on HILIC separations that utilize just acetonitrile and water, it becomes possible to overcome buffer strength inconsistency, high pH, peak suppression, lengthy buffer development time and other mobile phase-related issues that may undermine sugar separations. An added benefit is that the high content of acetonitrile in the mobile phase serves to decrease interferences because non-polar compounds and contaminants are forced to elute early in the run.
